Flickr and Buzznet have some competition. 23 Ltd. launched today at the Innovate! Europe '05 conference as a photo sharing site that founder Thomas Madsen-Mygdal claims is easier to use than the two established online photo communities.

Named after the theory that says there is more than a 50% chance of two people sharing the same birthday in a group of only 23, the Danish company allows users to upload, share, organize and describe their photos. Users can also receive permission to view their friends' photos. There is a free version and one that provides users with unlimited storage for €29 per year.

Madsen-Mygdal believes that the vast majority of the 500 million people with digital cameras still keep most of their pictures on their hard drives because the existing services are too complicated to figure out. Is 23 going to be the way to get those billions of photos onto the web? — Joshua Jaffe from
