A throw-away, obligatory question from The Deal's Richard Morgan at the Convergence 2.0 conference back in June to Mel Karmazin led to widespread speculation and a temporary uptick for both Sirius and rival XM's share prices. Karmazin played the devil's advocate when asked if Sirius would do a deal with XM, the press took him seriously, and continues to do...

The gap between the No. 1 and No. 2 satellite radio companies continues to close. Sirius, currently No. 2, added 441,100 net new subscribers in the third quarter, bringing its total to 5.12 million (analysts put the number at 440,000). The service will cost $7.99 per month, and the release hinted at future deals with other wireless carriers. In the good news/bad news arena today is this announcement from Google and XM Radio. The two companies will team up to enhance XM's advertising, the only problem is that advertising is what made a lot of people flee terrestrial radio for the uncluttered satellite world. Both XM and Sirius currently have advertising on their talk radio stations, and XM...

Hilary Rosen may be the Johnny Damon of the music world. Damon, formerly the center fielder for the Boston Red Sox took the money and ran to the arch-rival New York Yankees, a move met with hatred in Boston and skepticism in New York. Rosen went from being chief of the Recording Industry Association of America, to consulting for XM...

During the Convergence 2.0 conference Sirius CEO Mel Karmazin talked about a new, fully-portable Sirius receiver/MP3 player. He even took a beta version of the device out of his pocket and flashed it to the crowd. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera handy, and thought the opportunity was lost. Luckily, another photographer working for The Deal was front and center...

Techdirt had some particularly uninformed comments regarding Mel Karmazin's keynote at the conference as well. The post titled, "Does Mel Karmazin Realize That XM Isn't The...
