121602_cicahn%2C0.jpgCarl Icahn (pictured at right) lost his bid for a seat on the Motorola Inc. board by a relatively small margin. Icahn received 717.1 million votes while incumbent board member John White got 931.7 million votes. (All the other directors that were re-elected to the board received at least 1.6 billion votes.) Icahn's response to this fairly strong showing will probably depend on whether he's a glass-half-full or glass-half-empty kind of guy. On the one hand, some 717 million shareholders gave him the nod. Not bad for a dissident shareholder who by his own admission had no experience running a cell-phone business. On the other hand, Icahn was defeated by another director whose day job is far removed from the telecom sector. A Motorola board member since 1995, White is the chancellor and distinguished professor of industrial engineering of the University of Arkansas. —Andrea Orr
