Veveo Inc. quietly raised $14 million in May from Norwest Venture Partners, Matrix Partners and North Bridge Venture Partners, bringing its total venture funding to $28 million, the mobile search specialist reveals to VentureBeat. When the company's vTap service launches Sept. 10, it will allow mobile phone users to search quickly for Web videos and other Internet content, such as Wikipedia entries. The vTap service will work with Apple Inc.'s iPhone and phones based on Windows Mobile.

VCs are keen on mobile search these days. For example, in June 4Info Inc. completed a $10 million Series D round of funding led by Gannett Co. with participation from U.S. Venture Partners, Draper Fisher Jurvetson and Sand Hill Capital. The company's mobile search service enables consumers to find movie times, sports scores, stock quotes, weather and flight information on their mobile phones.

The sector is also seeing some M&A action. In May, Nuance Communications Inc. agreed to pay $293 million in cash and stock for rival VoiceSignal Technologies Inc., with plans to develop mobile phone services that let customers find data using voice-activated commands. —Mary Kathleen Flynn
