jung.jpgAvon Products Inc. CEO Andrea Jung "will add a new dimension" to Apple Inc.'s board of directors, says Steve Jobs. Actually, two new dimensions, as she is both female and Asian.

The only woman to sit on Apple's board, Jung is an ace at selling products to women. Born in Toronto to a Shanghai-born mother and a Hong Kong-born father, Jung is fluent in Mandarin and a pro at selling consumer goods in China. She is likely to be a big asset to the computer maker in both markets.

CEO of Avon since 1999, she is credited with turning the company around and growing it to nearly $9 billion annual revenue, in part through focusing the company on the booming market for consumer products in China. She also serves on the boards of General Electric Corp., the New York Presbyterian Hospital and Catalyst Inc., the nonprofit promoter of women in business.

Jung joins Apple's eight-person board, which includes Jobs, Al Gore and Google Inc. CEO Eric Schmidt. The board has come under fire in recent months from Institutional Shareholder Services Inc. and others who criticize its handling of the company's stock options backdating scandal, which created the vacancy filled by Jung when former CFO Fred Anderson resigned from the company and the board. Although Apple admits to backdating more than 6,000 of the 42,000 options awarded to Jobs and other executives between 1997 and 2002, the board cleared Jobs of wrongdoing. - Mary Kathleen Flynn
