Seesmic, a service that makes it easy for people to have informal video conversations over the Internet and that recently raised $6 million from some of the most well-known tech investors in the world, has acquired Twhirl, a popular Twitter client that connects the microblogging service with other microblogging services, Pownce and Jaiku. Terms are undisclosed.

"With Seesmic support in Twhirl, people will be able to join the video conversation constantly and easily straight from their desktops," instead of having to go through a browser, says Seesmic founder Löic Le Meur in a statement. "Our acquisition of Twhirl is a part of our overall effort to make video conversations easy and accessible anywhere." Twhirl creator Marco Kaiser is joining Seesmic.

Seesmic's backers are impressive, with $5.5 million coming from Atomico Investments, a firm operated by Skype co-founders Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis. Prominent angels include SoftTechVC founder Jeff Clavier, LinkedIn Corp. founder Reid Hoffman, blogger Michael Arrington, angel investor Ron Conway, former AOL chief Steve Case, FON founder Martin Varsavsky, Goldman, Sachs & Co. managing director Michael Parekh, Knight Center for Digital Media Entrepreneurship director Dan Gillmor, video blogger Steve Garfield, SupportSoft Inc. co-founder Mark Pincus, Topica Inc. founder Ariel Poler and Pulver.com founder Jeff Pulver. - Mary Kathleen Flynn
