Online speed dating is only one of the ways Stephen Stokols, co-founder and CEO of Woo Media Inc., wants people to use WooMe, the online introduction service that gives Web cam users 60 seconds to make a good first impression. After testing the multimedia service with tens of thousands of volunteers over the last two and a half months, Stokols cut the ribbon on the service on Wednesday.

Recently married, Stokols, 33, isn't seeking his soul mate on WooMe. Instead, he tells Tech Confidential he's using it to vet carpool partners and to screen prospective employees before face-to-face interviews.

It was conversations with his twenty-something sister and her friends that provided inspiration for WooMe. They complained that traditional online dating sites were "lame" and said they preferred offline speed dating -- which led him to marry the two techniques in WooMe.

Woo Media is Stokols' second startup. In 2000 he sold his online gift registry JustWhatiWant.com "for eight figures" to CMGI Inc. He worked at the Internet incubator long enough to help position AltaVista Co. for its 2003 sale to Overture Services Inc. (acquired that same year by Yahoo! Inc. for $1.6 billion). Stokols then joined British Telecom in 2004, becoming its youngest ever vice president.

At WooMe, Stokols raised a $1.9 million Series A round in April from Atomico Investments, better known as the investment firm for Skype Technologies SA co-founder Niklas Zennstrom; Luxembourg early-stage venture firm Mangrove Capital Partners; and European investor Klaus Hommels. - Mary Kathleen Flynn

From: Mary Kathleen Flynn,

Paul,

Have you used WooMe yet?

They got so much traffic yesterday, they had some tech troubles, but it seems better today.

Lemme know what you think.

Cheers,
