The picture got a little clearer Tuesday regarding Tallwood Capital's and Oak Hill Capital Partners' plans for the Silicon Valley Technology Center, which the two venture firms acquired from Cypress Semiconductor Corp. for $53 million earlier this year.

The firms announced that SVTC, which provides outsourced development and prototyping services to other chip developers, will merge with the Austin-based ATDF, the research and development center of semiconductor industry research consortium SEMATECH. No terms were announced.

It's rare that VC firms acquire the unwanted units of technology firms, but it has happened previously in the semiconductor sector. VantagePoint Venture Partners acquired Aviza Technology Inc., formerly a unit of Dutch chip equipment maker ASML Holdings NV, in 2003 and eventually took it public in a back-door listing.

The exit for Tallwood and Oak Hill is likely to come in a trade sale, as the enlarged SVTC seems more viable as a part of a larger organization than as a standalone public company. - Olaf de Senerpont Domis

From: angelita,

There is not a single customer of SVTC that is happy with the service quality or throughput.
I'm sad to see that ATDF has been adquired by SVTC.
It would have been better for all SVTC unhappy customers if ATDF would have become a competitor of SVTC.
Too sad.

From: Olaf,

Angelita - I'd be interested in hearing details about the dissatisfaction with SVTC. Please email me at odomis@thedeal.com.
Thanks,
Olaf
