Teneros
Mission-critical infrastructure startup Teneros Inc. has raised a $40 million Series D funding. Advanced Equities Inc. of Chicago led the fourth round, joined by insiders New Enterprise Associates of Baltimore, Sevin Rosen Funds of Austin, Israel's STAR Ventures and Goldman, Sachs & Co.'s San Francisco-based venture arm. The five-year-old company has raised a total of $84.5 million in venture capital. Mountain View, Calif.-based Teneros develops appliances to ensure continuity of operations for Microsoft Exchange unified communications in the event of power failures, network outages, server failures, data corruption or other disasters. Its lead product, launched in October 2005, is an appliance that assures computer users access to key infrastructure applications such as e-mail. -- G.W.

Centrifuge Systems
Mclean, Va.-based Centrifuge Systems Inc., a provider of business intelligence software, has received a $4.5 million first round from Novak Biddle Venture Partners of Bethesda, Md. Centrifuge develops visualization software to help organizations find insights, patterns and relationships hidden in their data. The financing will help fund the company's growth and product development. Novak Biddle general partners Andrea Kaufman and Roger Novak have joined the company's board of directors. -- G.W.
eScreen
Washington, DC-based Carlyle Venture Partners has invested an undisclosed amount in eScreen Inc., a leading vendor of drug screening and electronic hiring program management technology. eScreen has an FDA-approved, instrument-read, rapid urine-based drug test system that gives a paperless drug screening alternative to conventional laboratory-based tests. The company will use the funds for working capital and for investment in new products and services. Founded in 2001, eScreen's products include medical review, physical and integrated pre-employment program management software. -- G.W.

Ringleader Digital
Mobile advertising network Ringleader Digital has raised $6 million in a Series A venture capital round from marketing services company W2 Group of Waltham, Mass. New York-based Ringleader (formerly MoPhap) will use the capital to build out its mobile advertising network for corporate development and marketing. Ringleader operates a device-agnostic network for third-party mobile ad services that specifically targets ads by device functionality. -- G.W.

PEAK Surgical
Palo Alto, Calif.-based PEAK Surgical Inc. raised $21 million in a Series C round led by Signet Healthcare Partners of New York and including previous investors Lehman Brothers and Venrock Associates, both of New York. The company plans to later this year commercially introduce a radiofrequency surgical cutting tool for applications in general, cardiac, gynecologic, plastic and neuro surgery. The company says its PlasmaBlade product can replace existing electro-surgery tools with no additional training and that it produces less scarring associated with thermal damage to tissue. -- Clifford Carlsen

Traversa Therapeutics
La Jolla, Calif.-based Traversa Therapeutics, Inc., a developer of RNAi delivery technology, has completed a $2 million Series A financing led by the San Diego Tech Coast Angels. Also participating were Mesa Verde Venture Partners of San Diego and Morningside Group of Hong Kong. Francois Ferre, co-CEO of Althea Technologies and lead angel investor, has joined the board. Traversa's technology is being evaluated by several large pharmaceutical companies to treat diseases of the eye and nose, metabolic diseases, cancer and infectious diseases, according to the company. -- G.W.
