Engine Yard
Engine Yard, a provider of Ruby on Rails application deployment and support, has closed a $3.5 million Series A investment from Benchmark Capital of Menlo Park, Calif. It will use the funds to expand the company's operations, for the customer service organization, and to enhance the company's core technologies. Benchmark general partners Mitch Lasky and Peter Fenton will join the company's Board of Directors. Ruby on Rails is an open source web framework that allow developers to create database-driven web applications more quickly than existing technologies. Engine Yard provides an infrastructure and hosting services for managing Rails applications.

Medical devices

ViOptix
ViOptix Inc. of Fremont, Calif., has raised a $12.2 million Series D round led by Channel Medical Partners of Skokie, Ill. Also participating was Lincoln Funds International of Costa Mesa, Calif. and existing investors Canadian Medical Discoveries Fund of Toronto and Morningside Technology Ventures Limited of Hong Kong. The medical device maker develops products for reconstructive microsurgery, and has secured $28.7 million since its inception in 1999. W. Gregory Shearer, a principal at Channel Medical Partners, will join the ViOptix board. Merriman Curhan & Ford served as financial advisers to ViOptix. Proceeds from the financing will be used to develop and launch additional clinical applications from its core platform technology. ViOptix develops and manufactures products for tissue oximetry, measuring oxygen saturation levels in tissues.
