Metacafe CEO Eric Hachenburg pondered the challenges facing online video sharing web sites during an informative panel on Internet video this morning at the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco. Moderator Liz Gannes queried panelists about YouTube's fate. It was a good question considering that some, such as Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers partner Randy Komisar, have suggested that Google paid $1.5 billion for a company that could be worth nothing one year later.

Hachenburg said YouTube put the industry on the map but all online video sharing sites are facing the same challenges centered on monetization, intellectual property, viewer experience and infrastructure costs. He said smart programming beneficial to viewers, content producers and advertisers is vital. He added, "The next winner is [the one that figures out] how you build a business around that."

Even Google hasn't figure that one out yet.
