Benchmark Capital, Sequoia Capital and Draper Fisher Jurvetson have made the most investments in Web 2.0 companies, according to statistics released today by VentureOne. The data also showed that the amount of money invested in these Internet companies doubled from 2005 to 2006 from $406.21 to $844.40 million.

Here's a complete rundown on the venture capital industry's most fervent backers of Web 2.0 startups:

The list of profitable Web 2.0 investment that comes out in a few years will be significantly shorter. Of course, that's okay as long as the successes outweigh the failures.

Sector gloom is growing but after the YouTube lucre, it doesn't matter too much what Sequoia does in this segment, although they do have Kayak.com in their portfolio. Benchmark has Bebo and MetaCafe in its pocket while DFJ is sitting on Glam Media. Even the promising startups such as those mentioned above are still not sure things. Unless, we're talking about Accel Partners' investment in Facebook.
