Bessemer Venture Partners' in-house blogger (and general partner) David Cowan released the firm's Fall 2006 Investment Lineup. He notes that the media world has managed to ignore the Internet for 10 years but now things are finally changing. The firm has made seven digital video investments in recent months:
IAG Research - TV research and measurement firm
NextMedium - Product placement platform
WorkMetro - Localized job listings for TV audiences
GoTV - Made for mobile video entertainment
Siano Mobile Silicon - CMOS chips to enable TV on the mobile phone
Revver - Embedded ads for user-generated video
Access Retail Entertainment - In-store video entertainment
The strategy of investing along a particular theme can pay off in a big way. Kleiner Perkins' big bets on the Internet in the mid-1990s and communications equipment in the late 1990s are the most notable and successful examples of this strategy. In the case of Bessemer, they've assembled an impressive portfolio that I think will capitalize on the need to monetize content across new platforms and devices.
