When Mayfield general partner Raj Kapoor asked his fellow venture capitalists during a panel at the Play conference held at UC Berkeley today what their relevance to the new media world was, a few pointed to their impressive due diligence personnel.
Hank Barry, a general partner at Hummer Winblad Venture Partners, noted that he has three daughters, which is his "primary basis for relevance in new media." In passing, he added that he had been CEO of Napster a few years ago.
James Hornthal pointed to his two teenage children, "which qualifies me to look at this stuff." After noting that he was CEO of Preview Travel, he did say that his kids are his primary source of due diligence.
Not to be outdone, David Hornik, a general partner at August Capital, is thinking for the future. He said, "I don't use my five year old for diligence, but some day he may be helpful."
