Speaking on the Beyond Search panel at this morning's Always On conference at Stanford, Flixster CEO Joe Greenstein said the company prefers its movie recommendation service to provide its users with fun and interesting recommendations rather than accurate ones.
Greenstein said that most people won't watch a movie they haven't heard of before. So, Flixster's users are searching for recommendations from friends about a movie they will either like or a movie they won't like that they can then argue with their friend about. "Because of the business we’re in, we’re not focused on how accurate we can be. It’s not just that it’s fun, it actually makes the recommendation better because I see a movie because my friend told me about it and I can talk about with him."
Flixster raised a $2 million first round of funding led by Lightspeed Venture Partners. LSVP partner Jeremy Liew sits on the board and has a passion for cheesy romantic comedies, according to Greenstein.
