Portico
Portico Systems of Philadelphia has raised $7.7 million in Series B financing. Edison Venture Fund of Lawrenceville, N.J., led the round with a $4.9 million investment, joined by the returning Safeguard Scientifics Inc. of Wayne, Pa., which contributed $2.8 million as a follow on to its investment in the company's initial $6 million funding in 2006. Portico's software is used by health plans to improve internal operations and increase efficiencies, by automating and managing business processes of provider networks including: contracting with and enrolling new physicians, servicing them, and streamlining payment and other claims. -- George White

Proficiency 
Proficiency Inc. of Marlborough, Mass., has raised $4.25 million in a funding led by Catalyst Investment Group of Israel, with participation from return investors Carmel Ventures and Pitango Venture Capital. Proficiency's technology enables manufacturers and their suppliers to extract and share product knowledge from diverse engineering and manufacturing environments. Its services are directed at the automotive, aerospace and heavy machinery industries. -- G.W.

Informatics

NanoImaging Services
NanoImaging Services Inc., a San Diego provider of three-dimensional transmission electron microscope imaging services to manufacturers of large molecule biopharmaceuticals, has completed a $1.5 million financing. The capital came from Merck Capital Ventures LLC of Woodcliff Lake, N.J., and will be used to move the company's service laboratory to La Jolla, Calif., next month. -- G.W.

PC30
French venture capital investor Sofinnova Partners said Tuesday that it has invested in PC30, a France-based technology troubleshooting company. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. PC30 was founded in 2003 to help individuals experiencing IT problems such as installation challenges, viruses, crashes, broken Internet connections and training needs. Under the investment Olivier Sichel of Sofinnova will join PC30's board of directors. -- Phineas Lambert
